How to Process an Event or Experience
with Kas Martin
Every day, our lives can be full of stories from very simple to exciting and even, traumatic.
You could be sitting on a bus and by chance, you may strike up a conversation with a fellow passenger and hear about their life and you share about your own.
This can be an enriching connection that may only last 30 minutes but impact you forever.
Sharing and Honouring our Stories is important.
It can offer healing to us, it acknowledges our experiences and our existence.
It is also a wonderful way to process your dysregulation - when you feel all wobbly and anxious or stressed.
It can return us to a Regulated state so we can feel calm and at peace once again.
Sometimes our experiences can be sad and cause us pain. We may not wish to share the story with anyone. We might need to 'process' the story or event/experience, so that we can begin to come to terms with it and Feel our feelings in connection with the event.
This is how we heal.
When we ignore or deny our experience or feelings, it makes us unwell, we may develop pain, headaches, low mood or anxiety.
Once we share/express the event or story, and bring it all to our Awareness, and we feel how we felt, this is when everything starts to settle within us once more and we begin to recover and heal.
It is as if the silt at the bottom of us has been all stirred up with emotions, feelings and possibly even shock. Until we process it all, it can't sink back down and settle.
And so... I have a story to share... a story that was a real event that actually happened just last night.
It was a beautiful, crisp night. Cold, chilly... there were leaves underfoot, crunching and rustling... the Moon was out... it was just a perfectly wonderful night...
I was looking after a relative's property while she was holidaying...
and this is where my story begins. You can hear all about it and watch my painting process as I share.
As you watch my video and see and hear me share and paint, it will encourage you to also share and process your stories in the same way. It can be from any event or experience. If you are new to this you could start with a small event to begin with and work up to a bigger, more upsetting experience.
It doesn't have to be a huge, traumatic event...
it can be small, funny, happy, cute, sad, scary or traumatic...
it can be any kind of experience you have been through and that you wish to express
...but especially wish to Process so you can find inner peace.
As you hold your story in mind, all you have to do is gather up paints or papers and glue... any kind of art materials that 'speak' to you in that moment... we don't need to know why we are choosing the materials, we are trusting our intuition to find a way of expressing what needs to be expressed...
Just trust your fingers, and intuition and allow everything to unfold.
You don't have to actually tell the story verbally aloud to yourself... and you can if you wish. I personally find this much more beneficial to me.
You can simply allow the images to emerge in the moment...
Please do not judge your art making... or your self. Hold your self with love and empathy. Be kind and gentle.
In fact... you could use your non dominant hand... it may look childlike and that is fine...
however, what comes out on paper will be very authentic, honest and true.
This will help you heal more fully.
